Mini exhibition of historical miniatures
"According to some historians, they were used by gamblers. Others say it was a school tool used to teach money management. There is a third opinion that the coins were intended as a talisman for a happy and rich life for babies," says numismatist Martin Furugláš about the remarkable Austro-Hungarian miniature coins, whose purpose is no longer clear.
One such miniature inspired a brand-new project of the Czech Mint – a replica of a coin with the motif of the coronation of Franz Joseph I, which is housed in a replica of a period postcard.
You can see it on our e-shop or in person in brick-and-mortar stores. But that's not all. The store in Brno, in cooperation with Martin Furugláš, has prepared a mini exhibition of original historical miniatures that will take you back to the times of the old empire. You are cordially invited!
Opening hours: Mon–Fri, 10AM–6PM
Mr. Furugláš, when did you start collecting coins?
I started as a schoolboy because I liked coins from the crown currency of Franz Joseph I. It was around 1986.
How big is your collection?
That's impossible to answer – it's still a living collection, but there is a lot. I also have pieces that are less well known. Even other collectors don't know them.
Which piece do you consider the most valuable?
Some pieces can take years to come on the market, and then the whole collection makes sense.
Do you collect alone, or does the whole family collect?
Practically the whole family. I couldn't do it without my wife – because I must have the highest expenses approved.
The miniature replica of the coin of Franz Joseph I was created thanks to your activity and expertise. How did your cooperation with the Czech Mint begin?
I am a long-time customer of the Czech Mint. I have been collecting your works for several years because they make sense to me. After all, you have a thirty-year tradition. I very much like to visit the store in Brno – I feel comfortable there and they are always friendly to me.
And how do you like the fruit of our cooperation?
It is perfect! I really like the elaboration of details.
Do you have any other ideas for us?
Yes, definitely. I will be very happy to continue working with the Czech Mint and I hope it will last for many years. I have materials for other projects in my collection and I want to share my information and experience with other collectors…
