Charles VI – emperor (1711–1740), Charles III as king of Hungary and Spain, Charles II as Czech king. From 1699, Charles, younger son of emperor Leopold I, was proclaimed successor of the last Spanish Habsburg Charles II (1665–1700). The struggle for Spanish heirloom ended in 1711 with a sudden death of his brother Joseph I (1705–1711). The superpowers’s fears of concentration of power of both Habsburg sides in one hands forced Charles to give up his claim to the Spanish heritage in exchange for large territories in Italy. As a result, the Habsburg middle European confederation of states spread over the largest area during the reign of Charles VI. With his death on 20 October 1740 the male-line succession of the Habsburg dynasty was interrupted. On the last Habsburg ducat from 1740 the text in circumscription contains the longest list of royal titles of one ruler: Charles VI by God’s Will Holy Roman Emperor, multiplicator of the empire, German, Spanish, Hungarian and Czech king / Archduke of Austria, Duke of Burgundy and Count of Tyrol 1740.
