The two-ounce silver coin with the motif of the legendary novel The Ingenious Knight Don Quixote de la Mancha is an artistic and technical unique as well as a collector's rarity.

When the Dark Ages ended and the enlightened Renaissance reigned, one single divine truth broke down into hundreds and thousands of relative realities. The human desire to know, discover and question was given free rein, and reality clashed with the ideal, the illusion and the dream. Don Quixote de la Mancha is the epitome of this conflict. An ageing and insignificant man who cannot distinguish reality from fantasy has paradoxically become an immortal and timeless icon. The humorous, tragic and critical tale of a misguided nobleman who, influenced by tales of chivalry, embarks on a fool's journey to undying glory was written in 1605, but is perhaps even more relevant today. Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes y Saavedra would surely marvel at an era where digital space, artificial intelligence, virtual reality and misinformation are often indistinguishable from reality...

The flip side of the coin is dominated by Don Quixote himself, besieged by his illusions. The blurred boundary between fact and fiction is symbolised by the hat' s crepe, which transitions seamlessly into the Spanish landscape. The knight riding his mare Rocinante, supplemented with his servant Sancho Panza on a donkey, meets a lion or a whipped pachyderm. Of course, the famous windmills, which the hero has mistaken for giants, cannot be absent from the relief. Special attention is also paid to Dulcinea, Don Quixote's love, who is depicted in a gilded medallion. The richly decorated obverse side is then dedicated to the necessary attributes of the issuer of the coin, which is the island of Niue - it bears its national emblem, the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2024. All this stands out in high relief highlighted by patina.
