Product description
A sensational silver coin from a series that nostalgically recalls the milestones of technology, this coin is shaped like a computer floppy disk.
When you say floppy disk, those of us who worked with computers in the 80s and 90s immediately think of what we're talking about. Magnetic data media was used to store and transmit electronic data - to distribute software or create backups. Three-and-a-half-inch floppy disks, with a capacity of 1.44 MB, became the most widely used. This was first overwhelming, then sufficient, and finally completely inadequate. As information technology evolved, the size of programs - from operating systems to computer games - and individual files such as megapixel digital photographs swelled exponentially. Because of their low speed, low capacity and short lifespan, floppy disks became obsolete and were replaced by other media - CDs, flash drives, portable hard drives and cloud storage. Although awareness of floppy disks is gradually fading, their legacy is ubiquitous in the computing world. Indeed, the unmistakable floppy disk symbol serves as an icon for saving a file…
To resemble a real historical artefact with all its components, the floppy coin is coloured. The inscriptions on the reverse side state FLOPPY DISK (flexible disc), 2 OZ (two troy ounces), SILVER .999 (pure silver) and MINTAGE 499 (mintage of 499). Because the Power Coin is licensed by a foreign issuer, the Island of Niue, the obverse side of the coin bears its necessary attributes - national emblem, nominal value of 2 DOLLARS (NZD) and year of issue 2024.
The coin is set in an attractive frame which evokes the idea of the digital world at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s.
