Product description

We commemorate the 100th anniversary of Bohemia B-5 - the first aircraft of Czechoslovakia - in 2019. Therefore the Czech National Bank introduces the silver commemorative coin with a nominal value of 200 CZK coined in a quality standard.

The premiere flight of the B-5 airplane, designed by the Pilsen Bohemian association, took place at Bory airport near by Pilsen on April 27, 1919, directed by Rudolf Polanecký, an expert pilot who was awarded for bravery by the Austro-Hungarian Air Force. The two-seat biplane was soon introduced to the public in Pilsen, when flyers promoted the aeronautics on the sky. The Bohemia B-5 was then used to train new pilots and attended the welcome event of President Masaryk, who visited the West Bohemian metropolis on 17 May. However, this famous flight ended tragically - the plane crashed and one of the junior pilots died in the cockpit. Even this did not discouraged the fierce designers, and although they had to rebuild the hull, the machine was able to fly in just six weeks. Later, it was exposed at Prague airport in Kbely, where it served both for teaching and entertainment. Bohemian club collapsed after Polanecký's death in an air crash, and the aircraft was bought by Jaroslav Wiesner, who rebuilt it to a one-seat glider. Eventually, Bohemia B-5 was exposed in the National Technical Museum, where we can admire it a hundred years later.

The academic sculptor Zbyněk Fojtů won the art competition of the Czech National Bank. His coin presents a perspective view of the airplane together with four technical drawings - the NAG engine scheme and front, side and top views.

All Czech coins are coined in the Czech Mint in Jablonec nad Nisou.
