Product description
The Czech National Bank issued six silver coins with a nominal value of 200 CZK embossed in a version standard in 2017. The 100th anniversary of the foundation of the czech astronomical society became the main motif of the last one.
The foundation of the czech astronomical society dates back to 1917, which means back to the First World War. The representatives of Austria-Hungary were not inclined to idea of the national association, however, a group of professional astronomers who wanted to bring their passion closer to the general public were not discouraged. Domestic astronomy began to flourish after the establishment of an independent Czechoslovak state. Its future was threatened during the Second World War when the Nazis concluded universities, however, luckily the astronomical society took over the preparation of the post-war generation of professional astronomers. The interest in astronomy began to rise steeply after the war, among other things through the development of astronautics, but the Communist regime had broken the ties with the surrounding world and its astronomers for decades. CAS has once again become a valid part of the world astronomical community after the Velvet Revolution. It continues to develop czech astronomy and helps to educate young talents that represent us all over the planet for the past 100 years since its foundation.
The silver coin relief was made by MgA. Josef Oplištil, the artist, teacher and mentor of young medal makers. The obverse side is dominated by two mirror images of the lion. On the one hand the positively depicted lion is the heraldic emblem of the Czech Republic; on the other hand the negative beast then symbolizes the Lion constellation, which means Leo in Latin. The reverse side is dedicated to the logo of the czech astronomical society stylized in the form of a star around which the planet is circling.
All coins of the Czech Republic are minted in the Czech Mint in North Bohemia in Jablonec nad Nisou.
