Product description

Minting of Jáchymov thalers began 500 years ago. The Czech National Bank commemorates this anniversary by issuing a silver coin minted in quality standard with a nominal value of 200 CZK.

The Jáchymov thalers were minted from
silver that was discovered in the Ore Mountains by the Schlick dynasty with the permission of King Louis I in 1520. They became famous for the quality of the metal. They contained 27 grams of pure silver, and became popular at a time when monarchs deliberately reduced the purity of coins to enrich themselves. Millions of thalers had arisen until 1528, when the envious Emperor Ferdinand I deprived the Schlick dynasty of their right to mint coins. However, most of them were melted and used for minting of foreign coins in countries that did not have their own silver resources. Everybody - at home and abroad -  tried to imitate the successful standard introduced by the Schlick dynasty in the following centuries. We know garbled taller from Hungary, talar from Poland, tàliro from Greece, tallero from Italy, táler from Russia, dare from Persia, dalur from Iceland and daler from Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Holland. The Dutch currency spread throughout the world thanks to the expansion of international trade in the 17th and 18th centuries. Dutch coins were valid, for example, in the Middle East, Indonesia, or the Dutch colony in the New World, which later became known as New York. It was only a step to the dollar, which is used by almost forty world economies today…

Both sides of the Jáchymov thaler
are depicted on the obverse side of the coin that was created by Veronika Adamcová, a young student of medal craft. On the reverse and obverse side of the coin, there are portraits of the issuers of Jáchymov thalers - Count Stephan Schlick and the Czech King Louis I.

All czech coins are produced by
the Czech Mint in Jablonec nad Nisou.
