Product description
The second silver coin of the Czech National Bank with a nominal value of 200 CZK, minted in quality standard and issued in 2021, commemorates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Karel Havlíček Borovský.
Karel Havlíček Borovský was a tireless journalist, intellectual poet and uncompromising critic who did not hesitate to criticize the Austrian monarchy and the Russian Tsar, but also his fellow revivalists. Therefore, he had not only many admirers but also many enemies. The intrepid author of offensive articles was twice brought to trial, and although he was acquitted on the basis of his own brilliant defence, as an incorrigible rebel he was sent into exile in the Tyrolean town of Brixen. His brave struggle against Austrian absolutism quickly became a symbol of patriotism, the desire for freedom and the fight against oppression. Havlíček's legend was further enhanced by his untimely death at the age of thirty-five, which made him a martyr.
The design by the academic sculptor Zbyněk Fojtů won the art competition of the Czech National Bank. On the reverse side there is a faithful portrait of Karel Havlíček Borovský in profile. The obverse side belongs to Havlíček's work - journalism is represented by Národní noviny and Slovan, poetry by King Lavra.
All Czech coins - both commemorative and circulation - are minted by the Czech Mint in Jablonec nad Nisou.
