Product description
The silver coin of the Czech National Bank with a nominal value of 200 CZK, minted in quality standard, is issued on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of composer Josef Suk.
Josef Suk the Elder was one of the most important European composers at the turn of late Romanticism and Modernism in the 20th century. His work is not extensive, but it has unique features. As a student of Antonín Dvořák, Suk initially lyricised the influence of his teacher in a distinctive way, but later, after the loss of his beloved wife, he developed a demanding progressive style. He was emotional - full of warmth towards other people - and this was reflected in his work. Proof of Suk's deep sense of inner lyricism is the inimitable charm of his early popular compositions and the intricately ruminative poetry of his later work, with a breadth of expression ranging from sensitive intimacy to monumental expression... Josef Suk was not only a master of orchestral composition, but also a first-rate violinist. His Czech Quartet represented a milestone in Czech chamber music performance and has rightly achieved world renown.
The design by the medal maker MgA. Petra Čánská won the art competition of the Czech National Bank. The expert committee particularly appreciated the original portrait of Josef Suk on the reverse side. The obverse side is dominated by the violin corpus placed on Suk's note autographs.
