Product description
Architect Jože Plečnik was born and worked in Ljubljana, but he also left an indelible mark in Prague. Therefore, the Czech National Bank's silver coin with a nominal value of 200 CZK, minted in standard quality, pays tribute to him on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of his birth.
During the First Republic, many patriots asked why the presidential office had entrusted the reconstruction of Prague Castle to a foreigner - the Slovenian Jože Plečnik. Perhaps it was because he was considered the most successful Slavic architect in Bohemia, because he lovingly combined the old with the new and was an unquestionable master of his craft. The breadth of his knowledge, skills and inventiveness was extraordinary - he was able to perfectly combine the professions of architect, builder, artist, graphic artist, restorer, designer, furniture maker and garden architect. Every work he completed down to the smallest detail, including interiors, furnishings and applied arts. He worked thoughtfully and excelled in novel combinations of basic building elements. His means of expression were monumental, yet sensitive. He achieved unconventional results with traditional means. Under Plečnik's baton, the ancient Castle became a dignified seat of the head of a democratic state and at the same time opened up to the public.
The design processed by the medal maker Vojtěch Dostál, DiS. won the art competition of the Czech National Bank. The expert committee was impressed by the perfect portrait of Jože Plečnik in combination with fragments of his buildings. On the coin you will find the finial of the column on the Moravian Bastion in the Na Valech Garden of Prague Castle, as well as the façade of the Church of the Sacred Heart of the Lord on Jiřího z Poděbrad Square in Vinohrady.
All Czech coins - both commemorative and circulation - are minted by the Czech Mint in Jablonec nad Nisou.
