Product description
The miniset Century of flight consists of four silver coins of the Czech Mint. The first piece of the puzzle dedicated to the milestones of the sky conquest belongs to Charles Lindbergh – to the brave pilot, who became a conqueror of the Atlantic ocean 90 years ago, and thus started the era of intercontinental air travel.
An American Charles Lindbergh started his career as a mail courier – he flew a biplane and was able to deliver the shipments under all circumstances. When he heard that the hotelier Raymond Orteig announced a reward of the amount of 25,000 US dollars for anyone who will first fly from New York to Paris - nonstop and solo - he knew, what he must do, despite the fact, that for many other daredevils similar experiment became fatal in the past. He received an extra funding for his company and named his new aircraft Spirit of St. Louis. It was supposed to help him overcome more than 5794 kilometers.
Lindbergh's success came on May 20, 1927, when he took off from New York's airport. Many people had doubts and predicted him the fall of Icarus, however after 33.5 hours he successfully landed in Paris. Overnight he was darling of the planet, has won numerous awards and set out in the world. He contributed to the enormous popularization of aviation and to its development as well (especially in the areas of flying at high altitudes and reducing fuel consumption), which enabled long-haul flights, which is taken nowadays as a matter of course.
A talented medal maker Asamat Baltaev, DiS. is the author of the visual image of the coin. When creating the reverse side of the coin he was inspired by photographs of Charles Lindbergh sitting in the cockpit of an airplane wearing the aviator helmet and glasses. Behind him there is his most famous machine - high-wing monoplane Spirit of St. Louis during a flight. The whole miniset has a common obverse side of the coin, which bears the themes of all four issues - airplanes of Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart, the airship Hindenburg and the satellite Sputnik. Moreover, there are other attributes including the island of Niue, which provides the Czech Mint a license to mint its own coins: the portrait and the name of Queen Elizabeth II., the year of the issue 2017 and the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD).
