Tokyo Olympics
The Czech team collected a total of eleven medals at the Tokyo Olympics - four gold, four silver and three bronze. The silver coin of the Czech Mint pays tribute to the Olympic gold medallist Jiří Prskavec.
Water slalom racer, bronze medallist from Rio and reigning world champion Jiří Prskavec was the biggest favourite in Tokyo in the kayak competition. He advanced to the final fight for the title from the first place in the semi-finals and thus started the final as the last one. But he coped with the pressure and made no mistakes - beating Slovakian Jakub Grigar, the silver medallist on the Kasai Channel, by more than three seconds to win the gold medal. He only realised that he was winning by a huge margin at the very end. "I didn't expect the time to be so fast at all - I only looked at it in the last few metres. It was totally spontaneous, amazing, huge. That moment when everything falls off you. I sold what I'd trained for and showed my joy that it was all over - that my Tokyo story had a nice ending. I felt a lot of pressure, but I managed to ride with the joy of a child. I just went there like that little kid who loves to ride the water," the Olympic champion confided. There is no big title that the Czech whitewater kayaker has not won - in Japan he won the last one that was missing from his collection.
The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of academic sculptor Jiří Dostál, presents the kayaker in the heat of battle with wild water. The inscriptions state JIŘÍ PRSKAVEC – TOKIO 2020 – ZLATÁ MEDAILE – VODNÍ SLALOM – SINGLE KAJAK (JIŘÍ PRSKAVEC - TOKYO 2020 - GOLD MEDAL - WATER SLALOM - SINGLE KAJAK). The sports coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the foreign licence of the State of Samoa, therefore, their obverse side bears the necessary attributes of this issuer - the national emblem, the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the year of issue 2021 and the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (WST).
Do not miss the memory of a unique triumph of Czech sport!
