Statutory towns
Teplice is the sixteenth statutory town to appear on the Czech Mint's medals minted from one half kilogram of pure silver.
The magic of the Teplice springs, which have beneficial effects on the musculoskeletal system, was experienced by ancient kings and emperors as well as contemporary athletes and cosmonauts. With a bit of exaggeration, it can be said that the history of the local spa goes back 18 thousand years. Rain began to penetrate into the depths of the earth in the wide basin between the Bohemian Central Highlands and the massif of the Ore Mountains, which turned into underground water. This water then absorbed temperature and minerals for thousands of years before finally gushing back to the surface in the form of hot springs. We do not know when people discovered their healing properties, but offerings in the form of Celtic and Roman coins from the Bronze Age have been found in the springs. The origins of the baths can be traced back to the founding of a Benedictine monastery by Queen Judith in 1154. The monastery included an infirmary where the nuns treated all kinds of ailments with the help of thermal springs. Since then, the fame of Teplice spread all over the world and the town grew steadily. For its exquisite culture and baroque architecture, it became known as Little Paris.
The obverse side of the medal, which is the work of the medal maker Štěpánka Doležalová, is dominated by Kolostůj's fountain. This symbol of Teplice from 1862 recalls the legend of Václav Hájek from Libočany about finding healing springs. A detailed aerial view of the city centre completes the composition of the obverse side. The reverse side of the medal bears a map of the Czech Republic with the statutory towns.
In total, only 48 half-kilogram medals will be produced - each specimen is hand-numbered on the edge and placed in a luxurious wooden case.
