Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows

The fifth silver medal of the Czech Mint from the Slovak cycle, which invites to contemplate the events that marked the heart of Mary of the Seven Sorrows, commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus.

The moment for which Our Lady had been preparing for three decades was finally here. Jesus was stripped by his tormentors, nailed to the cross and slowly died. Soldiers and onlookers alike insulted him and mocked his suffering. Mary had every reason to be remorseful - she could have invoked the Almighty and begged him for help, but she trusted in God's plan. The mother who had given her son life and devotedly assisted him in fulfilling his destiny could do nothing for him, but, helpless though she was, she ministered to him one last time. She stood by his cross. She was close to him - physically and spiritually - sharing his pain and waiting together for the inevitable. When one sees one's loved ones suffering, sometimes even mere presence can help... Jesus looked at Mary, with one of his disciples standing by her side. “Wife, this is your son,“ he said to his mother. “This is your mother,“ he said to the disciple. Mary was losing her earthly son, but she was becoming the mother of the whole church - all the believers whom Jesus loved. “It is finished,“ Jesus declared. Mary concentrated - her son's head drooped and the sound of the spirit leaving his body reached his mother's ears. Christ had achieved victory and redeemed mankind with his blood. Tears flowed from Mary's eyes. Even more painful than the loss of her son was the knowledge that there were many who despised the sacrifice of Jesus and were heading for eternal damnation with their hardened attitude…

On the obverse side of the commemorative medal, which is the work of the medal maker David Kružliak, the scene of the crucifixion is immortalised. The Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, Mary of Cleophas and the Apostle John stand under Jesus' tortured body. The reverse side, which is common to the whole cycle, is dominated by the bust of the Virgin Mary. Her seven sorrows are expressed through her heart pierced by seven swords.

An integral part of the medal is a brochure which commemorates, in words and images, a chapter in the life of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows.
