Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows

The third silver medal of the Czech Mint from the series that invites to contemplate the events that marked the Immaculate Heart of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, commemorates the loss of Jesus in the temple.

Mary and Joseph were devout Jews, and so they made their annual
pilgrimage to Jerusalem at Easter. When Jesus was twelve years old, he was old enough to be taken along. Then, in the temple, the boy was quietly and keenly beginning to understand his mission as Savior. After the feast, the family headed back home. However, after a day's journey, the parents, who had been attending to the other pilgrims in the caravan, were horrified to discover that Jesus was not with them. They returned and searched in vain all over Jerusalem for him. Mary was full of pain. She was tormented with remorse. She still had vivid memories of Herod's attempt on her son's life. She wondered what might have happened. After all, Jesus was responsible and obedient. He spent all his time with his parents and had no reason to be away from them. Joseph and Mary found Jesus after three days of anxiety. He stayed in the temple where he sat surrounded by scholars and theologians to whom he asked questions. Not to learn anything from them, but to get them to think more deeply about their faith, to reconsider their current perspective, and to better understand what God had to say to them. They were all amazed at the way he spoke to them. "Son, what have you done to us? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you," asked Mary, who found painful joy in finding her son. "Why have you sought me? Did you not know that I must be where my Father's business is?" Jesus answered...

On the obverse side of the commemorative medal, which is the work of the medal maker
David Kruzliak, is immortalized a scene from the Temple of Jerusalem. Joseph and Mary are watching Jesus talking to the wise men. The reverse side, which is common to the whole cycle, is dominated by the bust of the Virgin Mary. Her seven sorrows are expressed through her heart pierced by seven swords.

An integral part of the medal is a
booklet which commemorates in words and images a chapter in the life of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows.
