Product description
Slovakia is famous for its extraordinary natural beauty and the most famous ones appear on the silver commemorative coins issued by the National Bank of Slovakia. The Protected landscape area of Kysuce cannot be missing among them.
There are a total of 14 protected landscape areas in Slovakia, with the Protected landscape area of Kysuce located in the north-east of the country. Three quarters of its total area of 65 462 hectares is covered by forests and the rest by agricultural land. Deforestation began here in connection with Wallachian and hill colonisation in the 16th century. Today, the landscape is a mosaic of forests, meadows, fields and settlements with remnants of folk architecture. Wetlands are an important biotope. Kysuce is home to a large number of endangered plant and animal species, including large predators such as the lynx, the common wolf and the brown bear. The Kysuce Megones are a unique geological feature of the world - sandstone spheres with diameters ranging from 30 to 260 centimetres. Another rarity is the Korňanský oil spring - a natural surface effusion of light oil accompanied by the release of methane.
The commemorative coin was designed by medal maker Karol Ličko. The obverse side presents the characteristic representatives of the Kysuce fauna and flora - the river otter, the crested newt and the round-leaved sundew. The composition of the obverse side is supplemented with the Slovak state emblem accompanied by the inscription SLOVENSKO 2022 and the nominal value of 20 EURO. The reverse side is devoted to log cabins with typical shingle roofs and sledges called “krňačky“. The depiction of folk architecture is complemented by a silhouette of the Kysuce Mountains. The inscription on the reverse side states CHRÁNENÁ KRAJINNÁ OBLASŤ KYSUCE (PROTECTED LANDSCAPE AREA OF KYSUCE).
The coin was minted in quality standard by the Slovak Mint of Mincovňa Kremnica.
