If you know the film series Star Wars, you also know the name R2-D2. To this mechanical hero, who has won the hearts of fans worldwide, belongs another commemorative gold coin of the series inspired by the popular galactic saga.
The undaunted beeping astromech, whose servomotors saved the fate of the galaxy more then once, got to the universal affairs on board of the the royal ship of Naboo, which has rescued Anakin Skywalker from slavery. The little droid went through the Clone Wars at his side and in the service of the Alliance of Rebels then played a key role in the destruction of the Death Star, and final fall of the Empire. Several useful tools allows him to repair a spacecraft during the flight, the complex calculations of a hyperspace jump and malicious actions behind enemy lines. He also helps his inseparable friend - a protocol droid with a designation C-3PO - get out of trouble.
The reverse side of the coin belongs to R2-D2 when the Jawas - the collectors of scrap metal on the planet Tatooine - sold him into service on the farm of Luke Skywalker. Featured in the background of the android are evident strips of sand vehicles. The issuer of the coin is the island of Niue and the obverse side is dedicated to his attributes - the name and portrait of Queen Elisabeth II., the year of issue of the coin 2016 and the nominal value of TWO DOLLARS (NZD). The author of a licensed form of the coin is a creative team of the New Zealand Mint.
The coin is stored in a luxurious wooden etue with a magnetic mechanism, that is used for its exposure.
