Product description
The Royal Mint of Great Britain commemorates ten heraldic animals of the Royal House of Tudor. The fifth commemorative coin in the collector's series is dedicated to the Seymour Unicorn.
The unicorn is the mythical white horse. It differs from the ordinary horse by its cloven hooves, making it an artiodactyl, but its most distinctive feature is the long, spiralling horn that grows from its forehead. This boast is not for fighting - on the contrary, it is endowed with magical healing power... The wild stallion has been seen for centuries as a symbol of nobility and indomitability. It was considered the most powerful creature in the world, so it is no wonder that the British King Henry VIII included it among his heraldic animals. He then bestowed this mark on his third wife, Jane Seymour - perhaps to emphasise that her task was to give birth to the heir to the throne. The unicorn is also recognised as a symbol of beauty, purity, innocence and fertility.
The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of artist David Lawrence, presents the mythical unicorn holding a shield with its hooves. The obverse side of the coin is dedicated to the attributes of the issuer - i.e. the portrait of King Charles III, the text CHARLES III D G REX F D (Charles III, by the grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith) and the nominal value of 5 POUNDS (GBP).
The commemorative coin, minted of base metal, is placed in special packaging which tells its story in words and pictures (in English).
