Product description

Winter time brings a number of leisure activities - sledding, skating, rolling and, of course, building a snowman. One of the most famous snowmen in the world can be found on the silver coin of the British Mint The Royal Mint.

We will probably never know exactly when people began to create snow sculptures, but the first written mention of snowmen dates back to
the 16th century and was written by William Shakespeare. Hundreds of years ago, however, they were not the merry peasants as we know them today - the snowmen represented the ominous personification of winter and all the suffering it brings. It was not until the 19th century, when the standard of living of ordinary people began to improve and winter began to be a time of pleasure. The snowmen exchanged the grin for a friendly smile and began to appear on postcards, New Year's cards, and children's books. One of the most famous stories for the youngest is an illustrated book without words by the author Raymond Briggs, which bears the prosaic title The Snowman. The story of a boy whose snow creation magically brings to life has received a number of successful adaptations - it presented itself as a short animated film, which was nominated for an Oscar, and now appears on commemorative coins…

The reverse side of the coin presents a
colored scene inspired by the original book illustrations - a boy in pajamas admires a living snowman with whom he experiences a number of adventures. The obverse side of the coin then bears the necessary elements of its issuer - a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, an inscription of "ELIZABETH II D G REG F D" (Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith), together with a nominal value of 50 PENCE (GBP).

The coin is set in a
special acrylic frame decorated with flying snowflakes. The package also includes an illustrated overwrap and an English certificate of authenticity that tells the story of the coin.
