1/2 ounce gold medal Franz Liszt proof

Gold half-ounce medal marks the 200th anniversary of the outstanding Hungarian pianist, music composer and one of the leading representatives of Romanticism – Franz Liszt.

Liszt’s father began teaching Franz the piano at the age of six and Franz soon showed exceptional musical talent. When he was eight he began composing in an elementary manner and at the age of nine gave first concerts. He then studied music in Vienna and met the greatest musicians and music composers of the period. His talent is considered to be one of the greatest in the history of music thanks to his innovations in keyboard technique and extraordinary emotional impact of his music.

Liszt left behind extensive work and many of his compositions are still played at concerts. In his youth he composed primarily for piano, then he was interested mainly in orchestral music and as an old man he composed spiritual music. He created a vast array of keyboard technique innovations and many of his compositions rank among the most demanding in piano repertoire.

The obverse side of the medal features the effigy of Franz Liszt as a young man. Related text, the year of his birth and the current year (1811–2011) are freely, i.e. music-like, spelled in circumscription.
The composition on the reverse side includes a grand-piano and, over it, a signature of Franz Liszt.
