Traditional Ducat Series

Historical aristocratic families in Slovakia - this is the theme of the second Ducat series of the Czech Mint in 2022, which was created for Slovak collectors and investors. The Eszterházy family is represented on the gold five-ducat.

The Eszterházy family
, whose origins can be traced back to the 13th century, developed from a small noble family into one of the most powerful and wealthy families in Hungary. They were a firm supporter of the Habsburgs and held the highest positions thanks to their devotion to the Imperial House for centuries. They owned the largest landed estates in the country and distinguished themselves in state, ecclesiastical and military service. They constituted an important military bulwark against the Turks.

"Nicholas Esterházy
(1583-1645) was a Hungarian nobleman, a palatine, a recipient of the Order of the Golden Fleece and a leading member of his family. His court was the power, political and cultural centre of the country. The background behind the portrait depicts the later seat of the family - the Fertőd manor house, which was built by Nicholas' descendant and namesake Nicholas I Esterházy," describes the medal maker Mgr. Art. Miroslav Hric, Art.D. on the obverse side of the five-ducat. The reverse side, which is common to all noble ducats, presents a freely interpreted and stylized composition of the coats of arms of four aristocratic families - the Andrassy, Palffy, Eszterhazy and Thurzo dynasties. "The heraldic elements used are not identical to contemporary emblems and only refer to their motifs," adds the author.

The schedule of issuance of the gold coin weighing five ducats has only
100 pieces. Its specifications are inspired by the First-republican St. Wenceslas Ducats.
