24 carat gold: a symbol of luxury and value

15/06/2023

Gold is a precious metal that has fascinated and attracted human attention for millennia. Its rarity and long-lasting beauty have made it one of the classic symbols of wealth and power. And 24-carat gold is the most valuable and purest form of this metal.

Karat is the unit used to measure the purity of gold/gold alloys (unit symbol is kt). At the same time, one carat means 1/24 of the weight of gold (either in the raw material or in the finished product). Pure gold without any admixture therefore has 24 carats.

Please note that in addition to the purity carat, there is also a carat/carat as a unit of weight, but it has the ct mark and 1 ct corresponds to 0.2 grams. Carat is used for precious stones, you will meet it for example with diamonds.

Purities of gold:

24 kt – 24 karat gold, pure gold. In the newer marking 999/1000 – contains 99.999% pure gold.

23 kt – In the new marking 986/1000 (it would therefore be exactly 23 and 2/3 kt). It is sometimes referred to as so-called ducat gold, precisely because it is often used to make coins. It is harder than pure gold, but still pure enough.

22 kt - 22 parts of gold, 2 parts of other impurities in the alloy (most often silver, copper, nickel or zinc). In the new marking 916.7/1000

18 kt – In the new marking 750/1000

14 kt – In the new marking 585/1000

8 kt – In the new marking 333/1000

Thanks to its completely pure composition, 24-karat gold has a rich shade and luster that cannot be found in alloys containing other metals. Since pure gold is also resistant to corrosion, it will last unchanged for many years. Pure gold thus often becomes a family heirloom passed down from generation to generation or an investment commodity.

But the purity of 24-carat gold also has its drawbacks. Without additional admixtures, gold is relatively soft, so it is prone to scratching or deformation. For objects that are not only intended to store value, but also to serve - for example, jewelry for daily wear - lower gold purity, which is more durable, is therefore more often used.

For collector and investment gold (coins, medals, ingots), on the other hand, the highest possible purity is desired. On the one hand, there is no practical reason, because you usually have these items safely stored and secured against damage. On the one hand, their goal is high quality and value, not only financially, but also artistically. In addition, investment gold is exempt from VAT under certain conditions, one of which is precisely the minimum required purity.
