Traditional Ducat Series

Historical noble families in Slovakia - this is the theme of the second Ducat series of the Czech Mint in 2022, which was created for Slovak collectors and investors. The Andrássy dynasty is represented on the gold ducat.

The Andrássy dynasty
came from Transylvania, but in return for military service they acquired possession of Krásna Hôrka Castle and became one of the most important noble families in Hungary in the 17th century. They significantly intervened in the anti-Habsburg uprisings and influenced the economic, social and cultural development of eastern Slovakia until the beginning of the 20th century. The Betliar manor house with its rich collections is proof of this.

"Július Andrássy the Elder
(1823-1890) was a count, the first Hungarian prime minister, politician, foreign minister of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Zemplín county governor. After taking part in the revolutionary uprising in 1848, he had to emigrate to Paris, but was rehabilitated years later and returned to politics. In 1878, he co-organised the important Berlin Congress, which is commemorated in the scene behind the portrait," says medal maker Mgr. Art. Miroslav Hric, Art.D., on the obverse side of the ducat. The reverse side, which is common to all aristocratic ducat coins, presents a freely interpreted and stylized composition of the coats of arms of four noble families - the Andrassy, Palffy, Eszterhazy and Thurzó families. "The heraldic elements used are not identical to contemporary emblems and only refer to their motifs," adds the author.

The commemorative mintage of only
200 pieces respects the specifications defined by the first Republican St. Wenceslas ducats.
