Product description

The ninth issue of the Czech National Bank cycle, which presents our most interesting castles, was dedicated to Bečov nad Teplou. The gold coin with a nominal value of 5,000 CZK was minted in quality proof.

The castle Bečov nad Teplou
was founded at the beginning of the 14th century at the crossroads of important land routes, where customs duties were collected. Its former medieval design has been preserved to this day. The building has not been reconstructed in various building styles and it has served only as a farm building since the Renaissance. The castle ceased to meet the high requirements of the nobility for housing and representation at the end of the Middle Age. It was not until the middle of the 18th century when a new, late Baroque chateau was built on the adjacent foundations of the cannon bastion from the Thirty Years' War. However, the reliquary of St. Maurus - a Romanesque monument, which was found under the floor of the castle chapel, is the most attractive element of the exceptional historical area.

The artwork of the coin was designed by the medal maker
Luboš Charvát. The expert commission of the Czech National Bank appreciated the "perfect depiction of the entire castle complex, including the Baroque chateau with a garden" on the reverse side and the "very elaborated partial motif from the reliquary of St. Maurus" on the obverse side.
