Product description
The tenth gold coin with a nominal value of 5000 CZK from the Czech National Bank's five-year series dedicated to urban conservation areas in the Czech Republic shows the beauty of Tábor. The coin is minted in quality proof.
Although Tábor in southern Bohemia is a relatively young town, it is historically important. It is linked to one of the most important periods in Czech history – the Hussite Revolution. In the 15th century, followers of Jan Hus sought a new home where they could live a life full of love and brotherhood, humility and poverty, morality and justice, which means the ideals of the Holy Scripture. Such a place was provided by the impregnable cliff above the Lužnice River and the Tismenický Stream, where the ruins of an old manor house with a bailey lay. Following the example of the biblical mountain, the Hussites named it Tábor in 1420 and began to build a fortress there. From here, the famous commanders Jan Žižka and Prokop Holý led their victorious campaigns until they were defeated in the Battle of Lipany. Thanks to the peace that was eventually concluded between the Tábor settlers and Emperor Sigismund, the settlement was not only preserved but also granted the status of a royal town. Tábor then flourished after it submitted to George of Poděbrady. At that time, it began to take on the features of a fully-fledged town, whose historic centre was declared an urban conservation area in 1961. The perfectly preserved network of winding streets in the Gothic style, which survived both fire and the Swedish invasion, is dominated by the late Gothic Church of the Transfiguration and the old town hall on Žižka Square, which leads to the underground.
A duo of medal designers, Tereza Vlčková and MgA. Josef Oplištil won the design competition organised by the Czech National Bank. The expert committee praised the elaborated collage of the most important monuments of the Tábor reserve – on the obverse side you will find Ctibor's and Škoch's houses, and on the reverse side there is the old town hall together with two burgher houses. All this is connected by sgraffito plaster in the background.
You can store the collection of gold coins from the ten-part series of the Czech National Bank in a wooden collector's case, which is also available on thee offer of the Czech Mint.
