Armored vehicles
The fourth gold coin of the Czech Mint from the series Armored vehicles commemorates the German tank PzKpfw VI Tiger, which served during the Second World War.
The prototypes of the heavy Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger, whose design was based on real war experience, were presented at the birthday celebration of Adolf Hitler in 1942. The first examples reached German troops in the same year. They saw their first combat deployment at Leningrad, but without much success, as they could not cope with the muddy terrain due to their high weight and structural complexity. Shortly afterwards, they performed better in Tunisia. The real successes came in 1944 after the Allied landings in Normandy, where they significantly slowed the enemy advance. The Tigers had noticeably better armour and more powerful armament than their British and American counterparts. An expert Tiger tank crew with an 88mm gun could take out dozens of enemy armored vehicles in a single clash, survive and repeat their success. To destroy one Tiger, the Allies had to sacrifice at least two Sherman tanks, but while German industry had been unable to compensate for the loss of equipment on the battlefields since middle of the year 1944, American and British factories had been producing multitudes of various armored vehicles…
The reverse side of the commemorative coin, which is the work of medal maker MgA. Martin Dašek, presents two depictions of a German tank - the three-quarter view is supplemented with a side silhouette. An inscription of the PzKpfw VI Tiger and a detail of the tank belt complete the composition. The stripes can also be found on the obverse side of the coin, which is common to the entire tank series. As the licence to issue commemorative coins of the Czech Mint is provided by the Pacific island of Niue, the obverse side still bears its necessary attributes - the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2022.
The coin is stored in a spectacular packaging in the form of a catalogue card full of period photographs, interesting facts and tactical and technical data. The individual cards can be stored in a collector's binder that you can also find in the offer of the Czech Mint.
