Old Picture Postcards
The third gold mini coin of the Czech Mint with a Slovak motif, which is set in a replica of a historical postcard, is dedicated to the Michael´s Gate.
The stronghold of medieval Bratislava had four gates, but only one has survived to this day. It was named after the Church of St. Michael, which stood in the neighboring suburbs, where people entered the city. This Michael´s Gate was built in the 14th century and had a moat, a drawbridge, a fall grille and strong gates. It acquired the upper octagonal part in the 16th century and its current Baroque appearance dates back to the 18th century. Few visitors did not pass through this gate – there were 19 Hungarian monarchs who were crowned in St. Martin's Cathedral. The gallery of the 51-meter-high tower, which offers a magical view of Bratislava Castle and the Old Town, is also very popular.
The reverse side of the gold coin presents a view of the Bratislava landmark with an onion-shaped roof. The composition is completed by a Slovak-English copy of the MICHALSKÁ BRÁNA - MICHAEL‘S GATE. Since the coins of the Czech Mint are licensed by a foreign issuer, the island of Niue, the obverse side bears its necessary attributes - a nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD), the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. and year of issue 2021.
The issue, which will delight both numismatists and philokartists, is an original and affordable collector's item and an attractive regional gift.
