Gold coin Old pictures postcards Brno - Špilberk Castle proof
Product description
Brno appears for the third time in the popular series of gold mini coins from the Czech Mint, which are set in replicas of historical postcards.
Špilberk – a vast complex located on top of the hill of the same name and a dominant feature of Brno – has an incredibly colourful history. It was founded by Přemysl Otakar II as a leading royal castle to protect not only the Moravian capital but also the entire kingdom in the 13th century. In the 17th century, the occasional residence of the Moravian margraves was rebuilt into a massive military fortress, which was besieged several times without success. In the 18th century, Joseph II decided to turn Špilberk into a feared prison for the most serious criminals and political prisoners from all corners of the Habsburg Monarchy. In the 19th century, Franz Joseph I abolished the prison, and for the next hundred years, its premises served as military barracks. In the 20th century, the castle finally found peace and quiet – it deservedly became a national cultural monument... Špilberk is, of course, a must on a postcard from the end of the 19th century, which served as a template for the coin's packaging. The lithographic print features the Old Town Hall and Petrov, which did not yet have its iconic towers. An interesting feature is the reminder of a famous historical event – the moment when Joseph II tried hard work of a ploughman on his way from Brno.
Medal designer Štěpánka Doležalová dedicated the reverse side of the coin to a view of the castle tower, which offers a breathtaking view of Brno. The composition is supplemented with the inscription HRAD ŠPILBERK (Špilberk Castle). As coins of the Czech Mint are issued with a foreign licence from the island of Niue, they bear the name and portrait of King Charles III, the nominal value of 2 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2025 on the obverse side.
This original issue is an affordable collector's item that will delight numismatists, deltiologists, tourists and patriots of Brno.
