Gold coin Old pictures postcards – Orava castle proof
Product description
Another gold miniature coin of the Czech Mint set in a replica of a historical postcard with a Slovak motif commemorating Orava Castle.
The steep limestone promontory, which rises 112 metres above the Orava River, has been inhabited since prehistoric times. No wonder - the site is strategically protected by a rock massif to the north and a semicircular earthwork to the south. Moreover, a small wooden fortress grew up here, which after the Tatar invasion in the 13th century began to change into a massive castle. The complex of buildings, which follow the shape of the rock, was finished in 17th century and consists of 154 rooms. It bears features of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles, as well as modern architectural trends. The development of Orava Castle, which is a leading example of Slovak castle architecture, has not stopped. Not only its appearance, but also its history is significant. In northern Slovakia, the castle guarded an important section of the Hungarian-Polish route and became the administrative centre of the entire Orava County. Its most important owners were members of the Turzo family - for example Juraj VII. The historical postcard, which served as a template for the coin packaging, presents the castle as it was at the beginning of the 20th century.
The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of the medal maker Adam Liška, DiS., presents a view of Orava Castle from the lower castle. As the coin of the Czech Mint is issued with the licence of a foreign issuer, which is the island of Niue, the obverse side bears its necessary attributes - the name and portrait of King Charles III, the nominal value of 2 DOLLARS (NZD), and the year of issue 2025.
The issue, which will delight numismatists and philocartists, is an original and affordable collector's piece as well as an attractive regional gift.
