In 1941, World War II was raging at full blast. The troops of the Nazi Third Reich and its allies continued its triumphant march and were leaving behind not only a defeated army, but also a devastated the cities. Nothing symbolizes the horrors of the impact of war on civilians as the name of Leningrad. To this heroic city is devoted the second gold Smart coin from the cycle reminiscent of the events, that took place 75 years ago.

A city named after V. I. Lenin was a symbol of the Russian Revolution, and as such should according to Adolf Hitler forever disappear from the maps. The tragic blockade lasted an incredible 872 days, during which the temperatures dropped to minus 30 degrees Celsius and the poor residents did not have much more than 125 grams of bread to eat, which half consisted of a sawdust. Despite hundreds of victims the terror did not brake the proud city and its unyielding defenders.

"I am interested in battles since my childhood. My dad draws and engraves very well, he studied on The Saint Petersburg State Art and Industry Academy of Alexander von Stieglitz. Because I grew up in an artistic environment, I started to draw since I was three. My dad always wanted me to draw some hero of our history, which influenced me a lot,"  says the author of the coin Asamat Baltaev, DiS., a young medalist, who comes from the Russian Chuvash Republic. He devoted the reverse of the medal to the Red Army, defending the besieged city, namely to the men from the antiaircraft artillery battery, whose precise shot hit the attacking Luftwaffe bomber. Another motive of the reverse is a rostral columnstanding on the banks of the Neva, the Leningrad landmark decorated with nautical symbols and statues depicting the Russian National River. Above the houses in the background you can see the glimpses of the searchlights. The war scene complements the inscription in Cyrillic БЛОКАДА ЛЕНИНГРАДА - Siege of Leningrad. The obverse side of the coin belongs to the attributes of the island of Niue Island, which provides a license for the Czech Mint to issue the Smart coins - the name and portrait of the Commonwealth monarch Elizabeth II., the year of the issue of the coin 2016 and the nominal value in New Zealand dollars 5 DOLLARS (NZD).
