Product description
The gold coin with a nominal value of 100 euro was minted on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the Bratislava coronation of King Rudolf of Hungary.
The coronation of the kings of Hungary was a state and religious act in which the crown of St Stephen rested on the head of the future ruler of Hungary. The history of this tradition began during the reign of King Stephen I in 1000 and ended during the reign of King Charles IV in 1916. The traditional place where the coronation took place was Székesfehérvár - Stoličný Bělehrad in czech - but it was occupied by the Turks after the lost Battle of Mohács in 1526. It was necessary to establish a new administrative centre for the country, which would be able to guarantee the safety of the monarch and at the same time be situated as close as possible to Vienna. The choice fell on Pressburg - today's Bratislava - and St. Martin's Cathedral from the 15th century became the coronation church. With a few exceptions, the Hungarian coronations took place here between 1563 and 1830. Pressburg became the parliamentary city of the kingdom, the seat of the king, the archbishop and the most important institutions of the country. Many personalities were crowned in St. Martin's Cathedral - ten Hungarian kings, one queen and seven royal wives. Among them was Crown Prince Rudolf, who was crowned King of Hungary in 1572. This monarch became famous as Emperor Rudolf II - a great patron of artists and alchemists...
The medal maker Karol Ličko dedicated the reverse side of the coin to a portrait of King Rudolf in a form that reflects his actual age at the time of his coronation. On his neck there is a Spanish collar, which was an obligatory element of Habsburg court etiquette. The composition of the reverse side is supplemented with a nominal value of 100 EURO and the inscription KORUNOVÁCIA RUDOLFA – BRATISLAVA 1572. While the upper part of the obverse side of the coin is filled with a view of the coronation city of Bratislava, the lower part is dedicated to St. Stephen's Crown. The relief is completed by the inscription SLOVENSKO, the year of issue 2022 and the Slovak national emblem.
The coin was minted by the Slovak Mint of Mincovňa Kremnica and issued by the National Bank of Slovakia.
