Mintage to order no. 2, proof - 130 th anniversary of the National theatre

The National Theatre in Prague is one of the landmarks of the Czech capital and an architectural jewel. But above all, it is a symbol of coherence and the embodiment of the longing of the Czechs for national identity and independence at the time of the national revival, and “mecca” of local artists.

On the obverse side, the author used a motif from the winning drawing of the curtain by František Ženíšek which he drew in Vienna. This curtain was however destroyed during the fire in August 1881 (two months after the opening of the theatre). The currently used curtain, the work of Vojtěch Hynais, was not favoured by the professional jury and was largely criticised by it; but the public received it with enthusiasm, and so the curtain was revealed in 1883 when the theatre was open for the second time.
The text in the circumscription reads: "130 LET OD OTEVŘENÍ NÁRODNÍHO DIVADLA" (130 years from the opening of the National Theatre).
The reverse side features motifs from a poster for the world premiere of Smetana’s opera Libuše written for and staged on the occasion of the first opening of the National Theatre on 11 June 1881. The words "NÁROD SOBĚ" (The Nation to Itself“) are placed in the lower part, symbolize the nation-wide collection for the National Theatre.

Two years – 1868 and 1881 – mark the year of laying of the foundation stones brought to Prague from various places of Bohemia and Moravia and the ceremony held on 16 May 1868 at which František Palacký tapped the foundation stones, and the year of opening of the National Theatre (1881).
