Product description

The First World War was a conflict that mankind had not lived before. Shots of machine guns and artillery ceased 100 years ago. A set of three gold coins of the Czech Mint was issued on the occasion of the anniversary of the end of the "Great War" on land, at sea and in the air.

When the Austrian archduke Franz Ferdinand d'Este was attacked in Sarajevo in 1914, nobody could have guessed that it will contribute to a world-wide conflict. "This will be the last war that ends all the wars," said Woodrow Wilson, president of the United States of America. Fights that were in the trenches, in high mountains and in the desert, at sea and beneath its surface, and in the sky ended four bloody years later on  November, 11 1918. The scars left on the bodies and souls of individuals and nations are still visible. World War I changed the world, which means political order, power balance, technology, lives and people's thinking. As a result, this cruel conflict did not solve anything, and the planet had to repeat it soon. "This is not peace. This is a truce for twenty years," said Ferdinand Foch, a supreme commander of the Army of the Agreement when signing a peace treaty between the victorious Accord and the defeated Central Powers. Unfortunately, the Great War is often forgotten in the shadow of the Second World War…

The trio of commemorative coins, which aims to correct this omission, is the work of an expert medal maker Luboš Charvát. Three war scenes appear in the relief of each mintage. The end of struggles on the ground is represented by an emotional moment when the infantrymen from the opposite battlefronts share a canteen. The end of the war at sea is expressed by a submarine floating alongside the cruiser. The ending of hostilities in the air is symbolized by a pair of characteristic biplanes. All this is connected by the silhouettes of doves of peace. The dove also appears on the common obverse side, which bears the necessary attributes of the island of Niue, which is foreign issuer that provides the Czech Mint with a license to issue its own coins. These are the name and the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II., the nominal value of 10 DOLLARS (NZD), together with the year of the issue 2018.

The three coins are placed in a luxurious wooden box decorated with thematic engraving.
