Product description
World War I is often wrongfully forgotten in the shadow of the World War II. Therefore the Czech Mint decided to issue a set of three silver commemorative coins on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its end.
The "Great War" was a conflict that mankind had not lived before, and no one could be prepared for the four years of hell unleashed in 1914. The soldiers could not expect colorful uniforms, glittering cuirasses, pompous hats, or regular formations like during the Napoleonic wars that ended 100 years earlier. They fell straight into the endless maze of trenches consisting of mud, barbed wire and clouds of mustard gas. The hundreds of men died there although the battlefront did not move one meter. At that time the tanks came to end the hopelessness. Shortly afterwards the British Prime Minister described these war machines as "too brutal for use against people" ... But the war was not just on the ground. It brought unprecedented technological inventions that made the battlefield also in the sky. The heavenly knights, who were first greeting each other in their airplanes, exchanged gentleman style for machine guns and airships to be the revolutionary means of transport, tossing bombs on the defenceless civilian population. Mankind has been fighting for thousands of years at sea, but even here the Great War came with something new. Submarine crafts became more dangerous than steel cruisers that unleashed unrestricted submarine warfare. And one such submarine that sank the ocean liner Lusitania has changed the history. The death of more than a thousand civilians has outraged the world. The United States joined the battle and everything changed. The Great War ended on November 11, 1918 and the world could relax. At least for a while ...
Medal maker Luboš Charvát, the author of a three-part set, dedicated the relief of each mintage to three war scenes, symbolizing the end of hostilities on land, at sea and in the air. The coins show emotional moment when the infantrymen from the opposite sides of the battlefront share a canteen, a submarine on the side of the cruiser, and finally a pair of distinctive biplanes. The silhouettes of doves of peace are the common feature that connects all three coins. The dove appears also on the common obverse side, which presents the essential elements of the island of Niue, which is the issuer that provides the Czech Mint with a foreign license to coin its own coins. These are the profile and the name of the emperor Elizabeth II., the nominal value of 2 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of the issue 2018.
The set of coins is stored in a luxury wooden box, whose cap is decorated with a thematic engraving.
