Product description
Exact 400 years have passed since the memorable Battle of White Mountain. A key event in our history is commemorated by the Czech Mint's commemorative medal minted from ten troy ounces of pure silver.
The Battle of White Mountain took place near Prague, near the Hvězda summer residence on November, 8 in 1620. Although the two-hour encounter had been considered a skirmish, it affected the fate of the Czech lands for three centuries. The uprising of the protestant Czech states, which was directed against the rule of the Catholic Habsburg dynasty resulted in the Battle of White Mountain. The year 1620, when the rebellion was defeated, is commemorated as a year of national tragedy, therefore, the Czech history has been divided into a pre-White Mountain and a post-White Mountain era. The Czech royal throne was seized by the Habsburg dynasty, which decided to liquidate the Czech statehood and carry out violent re-Catholicization… But did the mythical "dark age" really come? We must not forget the cultural boom symbolized primarily by the optimistic Baroque. Although the Utraquists lost their communion under both kinds, they preferred Catholicism to Lutherans or fanatical Calvinists. Even the Habsburgs, who were accustomed to rule a multinational empire, also dedicated more effort to the Czech language in comparison to the German Protestants, under whose influence it might disappear…
A commemorative medal, which was published on the occasion of the round anniversary of the battle, tells about the history, which is not black and white. The relief was processed by the academic sculptor Michal Vitanovský - an expert on Czech history, who coincidentally lives on the White Mountain. "The obverse side of the medal captures the situation after the battle. The dominant feature is a standing musketeer figure with complete armament. Behind him there is a horizontal line of dead soldiers of the Estates Army, in which individuals finish off the wounded and rob the dead. On the horizon there is a wavy line with the summer residence Hvězda and the sky with ravens that land on the battlefield. The reverse side then presents a fight of two heraldic animals - an imperial eagle with a Czech lion - supplemented with bundles of stabbing weapons and a small skull, " explains the medal maker. The inscriptions on both sides state THE BATTLE OF WHITE MOUNTAIN, 8. 11. 1620, 2020, THE FATEFUL DAY OF CZECH HISTORY.
