Product description

Sociable, curious, cute - that’s the sugar glider, which is featured on this colored silver coin.

Various small marsupials, which live in Australia, are threatened by a number of predators and are therefore mainly active at night. These include, for example, the sugar glider, which inhabits the northeastern coast of the continent and several adjacent islands. It spends its days sleeping in tree hollows, where it builds a nest out of leaves. It uses its tail which makes up as much as two-thirds of its 30-centimeter-long body to carry materials. However, its prehensile tail is not the most interesting part of its anatomy. The sugar glider earned its specific name “glider” due to the membranes stretched between its front and hind limbs, which it uses to glide distances of up to 60 meters. This allows it to move from tree to tree, avoid danger, and search for food such as insects, fruit, or nectar. Its large eyes and movable ears also help it navigate the forest. During times of scarcity or extreme cold, the flying squirrel may fall into a deep sleep. Even then, its membrane serves it well, as it can be used as an umbrella or blanket…

The reverse side of the coin depicts a young Australian sugar glider in the branches of a tree. The vivid colors which highlight not only the marsupial but also the flowers and a butterfly were achieved using coloring technology. The inscription reads the English name of the species AUSTRALIAN SUGAR GLIDER. Since the coin is issued with license from the Island of Niue, its obverse side bears the required attributes - a portrait of King Charles III, the nominal value ONE DOLLAR (NZD), and the year of issue 2026.

The coin, produced by Downies, comes in an elegant case and has a mintage of 1,000 pieces.
