Product description
The sci-fi phenomenon known as Star Trek has been entertaining us for almost 60 years. During that time, it has spread from television screens to movie theaters, books, and numismatic collections. True Trekkies won't want to miss this unusual coin featuring the iconic Vulcan salute.
When a spaceship landed near the town of Bozeman, Montana, on April 5, 2063, an alien stepped onto Earth, wanting to meet the first human to reach faster-than-light speed. He raised his right hand in greeting, palm facing forward, thumb extended, and fingers spread so that there was a gap between his middle and ring fingers, forming the letter V. "Live long and prosper," he added. Dr. Zefram Cochrane, whose Phoenix rocket equipped with warp drive had caught the attention of the advanced race of Vulcans, was unable to imitate the gesture, so he simply shook the visitor's hand... In the decades that followed, the aliens took humanity under their wing. They discovered unimagined potential in a species that had nearly perished in the flames of World War III, but they did not always agree. Although Vulcans differ only slightly from humans at first glance—notably in their pointed ears—the deeper differences between the two species are significant. The average Vulcan is much stronger than a human and lives twice as long. They are also capable of a simple form of telepathy. Even more different than their physiology are human and Vulcan society. The fundamental pillar of culture on the planet Vulcan is flawless logic. Although Vulcans' emotions are much stronger than humans', they are able to suppress them completely thanks to their disciplined minds.
The commemorative coin dedicated to the Vulcan salute is shaped like a hand. While the reverse side faithfully copies the structure of the palm, the obverse side features a portrait of the most famous Vulcan – Mr. Spock – and the text LIVE LONG AND PROSPER. As the coin is issued with the license of a foreign issuer, namely the island of Niue, the obverse side also bears its insignia – the national emblem, the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2026.
The issue limit of the officially licensed coin minted by the New Zealand Mint is 1,000 individually numbered pieces.
