Product description
The two-ounce silver coin with the motif of a gladiatorial fight is an artistic and technical unique as well as a collector's piece.
Throughout the centuries, the ancient Romans conquered various peoples with different languages, religions and cultures. In the areas they conquered, they asserted not only their power but also their civilisation. Although some aspects of it were progressive, others were utterly barbaric. One of the most cruel Roman practices was wrestling, in which people fought to the death for the amusement of bloodthirsty spectators. These fighters were called gladiators and became slaves, convicted criminals or prisoners of war who could gain their freedom as a reward. They learned to wrestle in special schools and then shed blood in Roman arenas. To make the games varied, some gladiators were armed with, for example, a net and trident, while others had a sword and shield at their disposal. Sometimes it was a simple man-to-man fight, other times entire reenactments of historical battles were staged in the arena. Reports survive of a four-month spectacle involving ten thousand gladiators, as well as naval battles in which the arena was flooded with water from a nearby aqueduct. It is estimated that an incredible one million people died in the most famous arena, the Colosseum...
The reverse side of the coin presents a victorious gladiator about to deliver the killing blow to his opponent. The defeated warrior, lying on the ground, can only be saved by the goodwill of the spectators and the capricious ruler, whose thumb will decide his fate. The richly decorated obverse side is then dedicated to the necessary attributes of the issuer of the coin, which is the island of Niue - it bears its national emblem, the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2024. All this stands out in high relief emb ellished with patina and gilding.
T&S Coin 's issue limit is just 500 pieces.
