Product description
This silver coin featuring the legendary Viking king Eric Bloodaxe is a unique work of art and a collector's rarity.
In the 10th century AD, the Norwegian fjords and mountains witnessed a relentless struggle for power. A man appeared on the scene whose name became synonymous with unyielding determination and brutality – Eric Bloodaxe. The beloved son of Harald Fairhair, king and unifier of Norway, grew up in an environment where the struggle for the throne was inevitable. From the age of twelve, he led Viking expeditions that first plundered the Baltic Sea coast and then Scotland, Ireland, and Brittany. His father entrusted him with the rule of part of the kingdom during his lifetime, but it was not easy to maintain. Erik had four brothers who also claimed their place in the sun. He declared war on them – defeating them in battle, plundering their homes, spilling their blood, and eventually becoming the undisputed king of Norway. However, his tyrannical rule was marked by cruelty and resulted in a rebellion by the Norwegian nobility. Erik was forced to flee. He sailed to England, where he became King of Northumbria, but he did not learn from his previous mistakes – his reign here was also violent and short-lived. He eventually died in battle, but his name has survived to this day. It has become a reminder of a time when bloodshed was a common part of politics – when the throne was maintained not through humility, but through tyranny...
The reverse side of the coin presents King Erik in an idealized form – with an axe, shield, and horned helmet. His power is emphasized by the rich gilding of the relief, and a Norwegian fjord looms in the background behind him. The obverse side is dedicated to a vast array of weapons, revealing that the coin is part of a series dedicated to legendary warriors. As the coin is issued with license from a foreign issuer, the island of Niue, its obverse side also bears the necessary attributes – the national emblem, the nominal value of FIVE DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2023.
The issue limit of the coin by T&S Coin is only 500 pieces.
