Product description
A silver coin featuring the famous banana taped to a wall reflects the essence of art.
When Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan stuck an ordinary banana to the wall with silver duct tape in 2019, he created a work that sparked an international debate about the meaning of art. The installation attracted attention not only for its bizarre appearance, but also for its price. After all, a work consisting of banal and ephemeral props that each of us has at home sold for an incredible $120,000! Some saw this unconventional act as a provocation—an eccentric joke at the expense of modern art collectors. However, the work was an ingenious commentary that aptly expressed the nature of the art market: what actually makes an object a work of art. Is it the material? The technique? The name of the author? The actual value of the physical object? Or the invisible value of the idea? The banana covered with adhesive tape quickly became known to the general public, who are otherwise not very interested in modern art, and became a symbol of contemporary conceptual art, which emphasizes not the material, but the idea...
The reverse side of the coin is dominated, unsurprisingly, by a banana covered with adhesive tape in vivid colors achieved using coloring technology. It is being viewed by six people – a faceless audience onto which you can reflect your own opinions and feelings. The obverse side of the coin is also in the spirit of modern art – it presents the uniquely conceived English text ART IS ART. As the coin is issued with the license of a foreign issuer, the island of Niue, its obverse side also bears the necessary attributes – the national emblem, the nominal value of TWO DOLLARS (NZD), and the year of issue, 2025.
This unusual coin from Power Coin is set in an elegant frame that evokes the atmosphere of an art gallery. The issue limit is just 499 pieces.
