150 years have passed since the birth of Aleš Hrdlička in 2019. He was the czech native who devoted his life to physical, psychological, social and cultural studies of a human. The silver coin of the Czech National Bank was embossed with a nominal value of 200 CZK in a quality standard and dedicated it to the great scientist on this occasion.
Aleš Hrdlička was born in Humpolec, and despite the fact he spent his childhood in America, where he became a world-renowned anthropologist, he had never forgotten his old homeland. He joined the struggle for the independence of the Czechs and Slovaks after the outbreak of World War I. Thanks to his political connections he contributed together with Masaryk to foundation of the Republic. He supported Czechoslovak science set the alarm bells ringing when the Nazism began to threaten his compatriots. He did not hesitate to draw attention to the highest places when democracy was endangered in Central Europe. At the same time, he stood up against the mistaken Nazi theories of the superior race. After years of diligent research supported by a number of international expeditions, he came to the conclusion that despite the visible differences between the races, "mankind is of the same birth". One day he wanted to come back to his homeland and live there, but he could not. The father of modern anthropology died after a heart attack in Washington in 1943.
The silver coin was designed by the medal maker Asamat Baltaev, DiS. The expert committee of the Czech National Bank appreciated the faithful portrait of Aleš Hrdlička on the reverse side and an interesting illustration of human evolution on the obverse side.
All Czech coins are produced in the Czech Mint in Jablonec nad Nisou.
