Product description
The silver coin of the Czech National Bank with a nominal value of 200 CZK, which boasts top-quality proof, was issued to the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the birth of Jan Blahoslav.
Jan Blahoslav was a literary scholar, humanist, priest and bishop of the Unity of Brethren. The range of his interests was enormous - he did not hesitate to share his knowledge, therefore, he is considered to be a forerunner of Jan Amos Comenius. He contributed to the development of the Czech lands mainly through his teaching and translation activities. His culminating work was the translation of the New Testament into Czech. In the spirit of humanistic methods, which include the search for truth and a return to the sources, he did not base his work on the Latin text, but on the original, undistorted sources, which were written in Hebrew and Greek. Blagoslav's stylistically enhanced text was published in 1564 and iniciated the translation of other parts of the Holy Scriptures processed by the best experts of the Unity of the Brethren. The comprehensive work, published in 1594, has gone down in history as The Bible of Kralice…
Jan Blahoslav was one of the first Czechs and Moravians to wear glasses in the 16th century. The reverse side of the coin which is the work of the medal maker Vojtěch Dostál, DiS., bears dioptric glasses. The expert committee of the Czech National Bank was particularly impressed by the artistic harmony of both sides of the coin, which are stylized in the form of Blahoslav's book Grammatica česká (translated as Czech Grammar).
All Czech coins - both commemorative and circulation - are minted by the Czech Mint in Jablonec nad Nisou.
