Dog Breeds
The fourth silver coin of the Czech Mint from the Dog Breeds series is dedicated to the Golden Retriever.
With the development of firearms, as hunting declined, it became the task of dogs to track down shot game and bring it to the hunter. Thus the breeds known as retrievers or translated as carriers were born. The most famous of the retrievers was bred in the late 19th century by Dudley Marjoribanks. The Scottish lord, who was an avid waterfowl hunter, wanted the perfect hunting dog with a great sense of smell, pleasant appearance and good qualities. His breeding efforts were crowned with success. The Golden Retriever, named after the vibrant shade of its coat, is energetic, strong and active, yet intelligent, obedient and gentle. As hunting pleasures disappeared from modern society, hunting helpers became mostly family dogs. Because of their affectionate and even-tempered nature, they are now kept as pets and companions that get along well with all members of the household - including visitors and cats. Golden Retrievers are also often used as guide or assistance dogs.
The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of medal maker MgA. Martin Dašek, bears two depictions of the golden retriever. The first one is coloured, thus giving the dog's beautiful coat a distinctive look. The second, which is in relief, presents the retriever in the arms of a little girl - the breed is famous for its love of children. The composition is completed by the bilingual inscription ZLATÝ RETRÍVR – GOLDEN RETRIEVER. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with a foreign licence from the island of Niue, they bear the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse side, the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD) and the year of issue 2021. These attributes are supplemented with a series of human and dog´s footprints.
All twelve coins from the Dog Breeds series can be saved in a collector's book that can also be found in the Czech Mint's offer.
