Product description
The Podpolanie folk costume is another cultural treasure that inspired the Czech Mint's silver coins dedicated to Slovak folk motifs.
“Every village has its own costume,“ says a Slovak saying. This statement is true – at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, there were 60 types of Slovak costumes. People in different regions used different fabrics, lace, lacing, embroidery and colours. The costumes reflected the availability of materials and the character of their wearers – their profession, wealth, social class or religion. There were also differences between work, festive and ceremonial clothing. Different costumes were worn by men and women, children, young people and adults, single people, married people and widows. This gave rise to a wealth of folklore that is a unique testament to Slovak artistic sensibility and creativity... One of the centres of folklore in Slovakia today is Banská Bystrica, where the Slovak Costume Day is held every year. Here, too, they have their own costume – and not just one. This ancient mining town lies on the border of several ethnographic regions. One of these is Podpolanie. In this distinctive region, time seems to have stood still – rather than people, you are more likely to encounter bears, lynxes or deer in the beautiful deep forests of central Slovakia. Long-time residents, who have lived here for generations, can be found in small settlements called lazy on the slopes of the hills. The inhabitants of these remote homesteads have always been self-sufficient, producing everything they need for life themselves. In addition to their craftsmanship, they also have a keen sense of art. Their lively Podpolanie songs and dances are renowned, as are their beautiful costumes, which are notable for their variety and richness of patterns...
The reverse side of the coin, designed by Petra Brodská, DiS., features a Slovak double-armed cross formed by floral ornaments from the Podpolan folk costume. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the licence of a foreign issuer, namely the island of Niue, the obverse side bears its necessary attributes – the state emblem, the nominal value ONE DOLLAR (NZD) and the year of issue 2025.
The coin, which comes in special packaging, will serve as a beautiful regional gift. Don't miss the coins dedicated to the Čičmany pattern, Dětvany embroidery and the Parchovany folk costume.
