Famous steam locomotives
The fourth coloured silver coin from the Czech Mint's series entitled Famous Locomotives features the Daylight, synonymous with American travel.
A streamliner is a vehicle with a streamlined shape that reduces air resistance. This term is most often used for American high-speed trains, which began to appear at the end of the Great Depression and were intended to bring people back to rail travel. Boasting modern shapes and distinctive paintwork, these machines became synonymous with travel across the United States. The most beautiful passenger train, which covered the 758-kilometre journey between the Californian cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco in 10 hours, was called Daylight. The iconic colour scheme, which was a combination of red, orange and black, adorned the Southern Pacific GS-4 series steam locomotive. Thanks to this, many people agree that there is no better way to see California than from the window of a train carriage...
The reverse side of the coin, designed by medal maker Mgr. Petr Horák, features the locomotive, whose realistic appearance with characteristic colours was created using colourisation technology. The name DAYLIGHT is incorporated into the smoke billowing from the chimney. The English text STREAMLINED GS CLASS LOCOMOTIVE reminds us that this was a streamlined locomotive of the GS series. The obverse side of the coin, which is common to the entire series, features railway tracks and a tunnel. As coins from the Czech Mint are issued with a foreign licence from the island of Niue, they also bear the island's national emblem, the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD) and the year of issue, 2025.
Coins dedicated to famous locomotives can be stored in a collector's album, which is also offered by the Czech Mint.
