Famous steam locomotives

The third coloured silver coin of the Czech Mint from the series called Famous steam locomotives features the Parrot, the pride of Czechoslovak engineering.

A locomotive tender refers to a special carriage used to store fuel and water supplies for steam locomotives. If it is an integral part of the locomotive, it is referred to be a tender. The most powerful representatives of this category in Czechoslovakia, and quite possibly in the whole of Europe, were the 477.0 class locomotives. The crowning achievement of Czechoslovak designers, whose production at ČKD for ČSD began in 1951, was one of the last steam powerhouses at a time when diesel engines and electrification were making a triumphant entry. The successful technology, which could carry an 800-ton train at 96 km/h on the flat, was matched by aesthetic refinement. The combination of blue boiler, box and tender with red running gear and red and white accessories resembled a colourful plumage and earned the machine the nickname Parrot. The last examples of the locomotive, which was intended for running express trains and fast suburban transport around large cities, came to an end in 1979...

The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of the medal maker Mgr. Petr Horák, presents a locomotive whose realistic appearance with characteristic colours was created with the help of colouring technology. The English text TANK ENGINE means a tender locomotive. The nickname PAPOUŠEK is embedded in the smoke coming out of the chimney. An additional motif of the relief is a subtle depiction of a real parrot. The obverse side of the coin, which is common to the whole cycle, presents railway tracks and a tunnel. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the foreign licence of the island of Niue, the obverse side also bears its national emblem, the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD) and the year of issue 2025.

Coins dedicated to famous locomotives can be stored in a collector's album which you can also find in the offer of the Czech Mint.
