Formation of Royal Capital City of Prague
The Czech Mint introduces Malá Strana on the third silver coin from the miniseries called Establishment of the Royal Capital City of Prague.
The most romantic part of Prague became immortal thanks to Jan Neruda's stories. It is surrounded by the Prague Castle between the river and the surrounding hills. Although the history of Malá Strana dates back into the past, it is mostly associated with the Baroque era. There was a devastating fire in the 16th century, when historical buildings were damaged. Therefore this place served as a blank sheet of paper for Baroque artists. There was Christopher Dientzenhofer together with his son Kilian Ignatius, thanks to whom the St. Nicholas Church emerges from the tangle of cobbled streets with picturesque houses. The building is characterized by a monumental dome and a sumptuous decoration dominated by a beautiful ceiling fresco. The tabernacle is considered to be the most significant Czech Baroque building. However, the Dientzenhofer style of architecture was considered to be radical so much that it is called the radical Baroque.
St. Nicholas Church dominates not only the Malostranské Square, but also the reverse side of the coin made by the academic sculptor Zbyněk Fojtů. Latin inscription MINOR CIVITAS PRAGENSIS (Malá Strana, the Lesser Town of Prague), together with historical emblem of the town completes the composition. The obverse side is common to the entire miniseries and bears the Prague silhouette (bordered by Prague Castle and Charles Bridge) accompanied by the inscription PRAGA CAPUT REGNI (Prague, Head of the Kingdom). The obverse side also bears the attributes of the island of Niue, which provides the Czech Mint with the license to mint its own commemorative coins. The attributes are the name and the profile of Queen Elizabeth II, the year of the issue 2019 and the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD).
The coin with the motif of Hradčany was issued after the Old Town of Prague, the New Town and Malá Strana. It will close the miniseries representing an addition to the numismatic collection or an attractive sight to visit the capital.
