Journey Around the World
The series of silver coins of the Czech Mint entitled Journey Around the World is a guide to the most visited metropolises of the planet. The third issue takes you to Sydney.
In the south-east of Australia there is Port Jackson Bay, which is the largest natural harbour in the world with a length of 19 kilometres. The rugged coastline was home to thousands of Aboriginal people until the British arrived. Strangers from a distant land established a penal settlement here in 1788 and named it after the Minister of Internal Affairs who was then the Viscount Sydney. The convicts and soldiers who lived here were gradually joined by more and more immigrants who came to Australia of their own accord - for example, as part of one of the many gold rushes. Sydney thus gained a democratic character, forgot its dark convict history and became a relaxed place to live. Today, with a population of over 5 million, it is the most populous city in Australia and Oceania. In addition, Sydney attracts millions of visitors each year who appreciate its pleasant climate and engaging environment. They'll find everything they can think of here - vast parks full of unique fauna, dozens of beaches perfect for surfers, a super-modern downtown full of skyscrapers and quiet suburbs, a rich and varied culture, delicious seafood, spectacular New Year's fireworks...
The reverse side of the coin, designed by medal maker Petr Patka, DiS., is dominated by the iconic Sydney Opera House. Its curves, which resemble ship's sails, provide a popular area for video mapping, which takes the form of a coloured Australian flag. Other landmarks that Sydney abounds include the Harbour Bridge, Sydney Tower and St Mary's Cathedral. The collage is supplemented with the traditional fireworks and a road sign that draws attention to the kangaroos. The obverse side, which is the work of Asamat Baltaev, DiS., and which is common to the entire cycle of travel coins, then presents the flags and landmarks of world capitals such as Prague, London, Hong Kong, Sydney, Rio de Janeiro and New York. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the foreign licence of the island of Niue, they also bear its national emblem, the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2025 on the obverse side.
The weight of the coins from the Journey Around the World series is three troy ounces for the first time in the history of the Czech Mint. A picture brochure is included in the package.
