Universal Goddess

The fourth ancient goddess to whom the Czech Mint's silver coin is dedicated is the Hindu Kali.

A dark, bloodthirsty woman with disheveled hair, a lolling tongue, a necklace of skulls and a skirt made of human hands...
The goddess of anger, change and death may evoke revulsion in us - especially when she holds a freshly severed head and a bloody sword - but among Hindus she enjoys immeasurable respect. Kali is the goddess of contrasts - a personification of nature that gives and takes away. She is naked, yet brimming with power. She evokes fear but also amazement. She is both seductive and repulsive. Although she has a terrifying appearance, she is in fact, above all, the protector of all life. As a loving mother, she destroys what might threaten our divine mission. Her seemingly threatening gestures express protection and kindness, her flowing hair signifies unbridled freedom. The horn of human hands represents the pleasure of the fruits of labour, and the head separated from the body symbolizes the ego one must get rid of in order to attain enlightenment... Because life and death are intertwined, and one gives birth to the other, Kali is not only the embodiment of great protection, but also of destruction and chaos. Only she can awaken within herself the power to destroy evil demons. Once she is on the rampage, there is nothing in the world that can stop her actions - except perhaps her counterpart Shiva.

The reverse side of the coin, designed by medal maker
MgA. Tereza Eisnerová, presents the terrifying Kali with four arms and three eyes. The half-figure of the goddess is surrounded by characteristic Hindu ornaments, which can also be found on the obverse side of the coin. There they are accompanied by motifs of Greek, Norse, Slavic and Egyptian origin - the obverse side is common to the entire cycle of divine coins. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the licence of a foreign issuer, which is the island of Niue, the obverse side bears its requirements - the nominal value of 10 DOLLARS (NZD), the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the year of issue 2021.

The great goddesses of the world are immortalised on large coins - each weighing
five troy ounces.
