Product description

The words spoken by Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk shortly before he died will finally be revealed in 2025. This great figure will be commemorated on a large commemorative medal minted from half a kilogram of pure silver.

Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk is mainly associated with the First Republic, although much of his work – philosophical, humanistic, pedagogical and literary – dates back to the period before the First World War. He became the statesman who broke the chains of the Habsburg Monarchy and brought us our long-awaited independence at an advanced age. However, there is no denying that the role of Czechoslovak president, to which he was elected four times and which he held for a total of seventeen years, was the most important. Masaryk's dignified persona gave the young republic the prestige, reputation and respect it needed to survive in a rapidly changing world. The respect he enjoyed abroad was evidenced by the alliances he forged with world powers, and his popularity at home is reflected in the titles President Liberator and Father Masaryk, which are still used today. The respect in which this dignified man was held is also evidenced by a saying from that time: “As long as Masaryk lives, Hitler will not start a war.“ However, our first president was plagued by numerous illnesses, and in 1935 his health deteriorated to such an extent that he decided to abdicate. He recommended Edvard Beneš as his successor and retired to the castle in Lány, which was entrusted to him for life. He died at the age of 87 in 1937. However, he did not say his last word. His son Jan stood faithfully by his side until the end, writing down his father's thoughts on his deathbed. Was it a message to the citizens, or perhaps a family secret? The curious public will have to wait until 19 September 2025, when the sealed envelope may be opened...

The majestic coin was designed by medal maker Mgr. Petr Horák. The obverse side features a portrait of the president in his typical “Masaryk cap“, framed by the tricolour presidential standard and the inscription “TOMÁŠ GARRIGUE MASARYK“. Tatíček Masaryk can also be found on the reverse side of the medal, sitting on his favourite horse Hektor in front of Lány Castle. The rich composition is completed by the large state emblem and the silhouette of Czechoslovakia with the presidential years 1918–1935. The frame is again based on the presidential standard and bears the inscription PRVNÍ ČESKOSLOVENSKÝ PREZIDENT (First President of Czechoslovakia).

The issue limit is only 150 medals. Each piece is numbered on the edge.
